Close enough to touch:
The magic of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s

KAGAMI makes its Japan debut.

Ryuichi Sakamoto’s piano returns to life in KAGAMI, an immersive solo performance made possible through a unique presentation using mixed reality (MR) technology developed for this project — a collaboration Sakamoto and producers Tin Drum worked on together during the last four years of his life.

First premiered at The Shed (New York City) in 2023, KAGAMI has continued to enthrall audiences around the world with performances including Manchester, London, Taipei, Singapore, Melbourne, Italy, Hong Kong, and now Japan.

The Japan presentation of KAGAMI introduces an expanded version of the work, produced specially for this exhibition.

KAGAMI offers a uniquely intimate concert experience, resonating both with longtime fans and with those discovering a Sakamoto performance for the first time.

As the performance begins, a virtual likeness of Sakamoto materializes in the venue through a unique dimensional photographic capture. Seated at his iconic grand piano and accompanied by ethereal 3D visuals designed to complement the music, the late composer appears through special optically transparent headsets with striking photorealistic clarity — seemingly close enough to reach out and touch his silver hair.

This multisensory event also features video, photographs, text, and even a fragrance blended by Sakamoto himself.

The Guardian (UK) gave it a rare ★★★★★ review, calling it "A magical experience that many people probably wouldn't have had the chance to experience during his lifetime."

KAGAMI is an ambrosially quiet yet profoundly reflective mirror of the music of Ryuichi Sakamoto.

There is, in reality, a virtual me.

This virtual me will not age, and will continue to play the piano for years, decades, centuries.

Will there be humans then?

Will the squids that will conquer the earth after humanity listen to me?

What will pianos be to them?

What about music?

Will there be empathy there?

Empathy that spans hundreds of thousands of years.

Ah, but the batteries won't last that long.

Ryuichi Sakamoto

Born in Tokyo in 1952, Ryuichi Sakamoto completed his master’s degree at the Tokyo University of the Arts. He made his solo debut in 1978 with the album Thousand Knives. That same year, he co-founded the influential electronic music group Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO).
After the group disbanded in 1983, Sakamoto continued to pursue innovative musical expression through works such as Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia, BEAUTY, async, and 12, earning worldwide acclaim for his ever-evolving sound.
In film music, he received the BAFTA Award for Best Film Music for Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence, and later won the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Grammy Award for his score for The Last Emperor, among many other honors.
Beyond music, Sakamoto actively expanded into the arts, creating stage works such as LIFE and TIME, and presenting large-scale installation exhibitions in countries including Korea and China. He was also deeply engaged with environmental and peace-related issues. He founded the forest conservation organization more trees and established the Tohoku Youth Orchestra to support the musical activities of children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Ryuichi Sakamoto passed away on March 28, 2023.
