Currently on display at VS., the large-scale Ryuichi Sakamoto exhibition "Ryuichi Sakamoto & Tin Drum | KAGAMI+" will host a special night museum event, "Open Reel Night," for two consecutive nights on August 14th (Fri) and 15th (Sat), 2026, during the Obon holiday.
This special event allows you to enjoy "Ryuichi Sakamoto: Musics - open reel listening room," which is usually only open to the public for limited hours during regular exhibitions, in the quiet venue after closing hours. At the first night held last weekend, the 1984 masterpiece "Ongaku Zukan" was played on open reel tape, and many visitors enjoyed listening to it.
Due to popular demand, we will be holding the event again over two consecutive days during the Obon holiday, with a second and third night.
The tapes played on open reel are meticulously crafted from uncompressed master tapes. You can enjoy the works with the same sound quality as the music Ryuichi Sakamoto listened to in the studio. Furthermore, during "Open Reel Night," the volume is increased compared to regular exhibitions, allowing you to experience the rich sound with a sense of realism closer to the listening environment in the studio.
Furthermore, on both days, "Ryuichi Sakamoto: Playing the Piano 2026 – D" will be specially screened before and after the open-reel playback. This program, which plays Ryuichi Sakamoto's performance data on his own grand piano and captivated many attendees at "sakamotocommon OSAKA 1970/2025/Osaka/Ryuichi Sakamoto" held at VS. in 2025, will be presented with a newly selected set of songs for 2026.
In the quiet and tranquil atmosphere unique to VS. at night, sip a drink or soft drink and surrender yourself to the music without worrying about the time. This is a night museum experience for adults, different from the usual exhibitions. Enjoy a special time only available on summer nights, slowly listening to the sounds that Ryuichi Sakamoto has pursued.
Held on Friday, August 14, 2026
Open Reel Night Vol.2 "Esperanto"
Released in 1985, this is Ryuichi Sakamoto's fifth original solo album. Open Reel Night Vol.3 “CHASM”
This is his 14th original solo album, released in 2004.
Created after 9/11, this album includes tracks such as "undercooled," a collaboration with Korean rapper MC Sniper, and "World Citizen - I Won't Be Disappointed" with David Sylvian, all imbued with anti-war and peace messages for a world increasingly divided. It is an album that symbolizes Ryuichi Sakamoto's philosophy and musicality.
